New Research Highlights Muno-IgY®’s Potential to Support Gut Microbiome Balance
Calgary, Alberta, Canada – April 22, 2026 – IGY Life Sciences (“IGY Life Sciences”) – New published research in Microbiome Research Reports adds to the emerging evidence base for Muno-IgY®, with findings relevant to microbiome, gut barrier, and next-generation ingredient innovation.
The study, led by Shahna Fathima, PhD and colleagues, evaluated the effects of Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) in advanced preclinical models designed to assess host-microbe interactions relevant to intestinal epithelial function, microbial metabolism, and microbiome ecology.
Muno-IgY® is a high-purity Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) ingredient derived from hen egg yolk and developed for applications in gut health, immune support, and microbiome-focused formulations.
Key observations from the study included:
- Reduced adhesion and invasion of adherent-invasive coli (AIEC) in the study model, suggesting potential to influence early-stage microbial interactions
- Increased acetate and propionate production in the SHIME® model, supporting beneficial microbial metabolic activity
- Maintenance of overall microbial diversity while supporting exploration of selective microbiome effects
- Changes in immune signaling and epithelial response markers supporting further investigation
For formulators and brand developers, the findings add to growing interest in precision, non-broad-spectrum strategies designed to support microbial balance while preserving microbiome ecology, an area of increasing focus in next-generation gut health innovation.
“The findings support a novel, mechanism-driven approach to microbiome-associated pathways using multi-pathogen-specific IgY, a class of antibodies derived from egg yolk that act locally within the gastrointestinal tract,” said Huan Nguyen, PhD Chief Scientific Officer of IGY Life Sciences and senior author of the study. “While these findings are based on advanced in vitro models, they provide scientific rationale for continued clinical investigation and support growing interest in IgY as a differentiated ingredient platform for microbiome-focused innovation.”
“This publication strengthens the translational case for IgY,” said Dr. Paul E. Kilgore MD, MPH, Professor at Wayne State University and study co-author. “The observed reduction in pathogen adhesion alongside maintenance of overall microbial diversity addresses a central challenge in microbiome-focused strategies, influencing the microbial environment selectively rather than broadly. These mechanistic findings provide scientific rationale for the human studies now underway.”
“For brands and formulators, this publication helps expand the conversation around how IgY may fit within microbiome-focused formulations, particularly where differentiated mechanisms and complementary ingredient strategies are of interest,” said Jit Mistry, Chief Brand Officer of IGY Life Sciences. “It also highlights the expanding role ingredients like IgY may play in next-generation gut health product innovation.”
The study explored the role of orally administered IgY as a nutritional strategy designed to support microbial balance through selective interactions, without broadly disrupting commensal bacteria.
The authors note that these findings are based on advanced in vitro models and that further in vivo and human clinical studies are warranted to evaluate their relevance in broader health applications.
The study was co-authored by Shahna Fathima, PhD, Huan Nguyen, PhD, Navneet Sharma, PhD, and Paul E. Kilgore, MD, MPH. The study was published in Microbiome Research Reports.
The research utilized advanced in vitro gut models, including the SHIME® platform developed by ProDigest, to evaluate microbiome and epithelial interactions.
This publication builds on IGY Life Sciences’ expanding evidence portfolio supporting the role of IgY as a differentiated strategy for supporting microbial balance and gut-immune resilience.
About IGY Life Sciences
IGY Life Sciences is a privately held biosciences company specializing in the extraction, development, and commercialization of avian immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies for nutraceutical and targeted health applications. Founded to commercialize a proprietary extraction process from hen egg yolks, the company develops high-purity IgY ingredients, including Muno-IgY®, for global markets.
IgY represents a novel approach to supporting immune and microbial balance by binding to specific pathogens and toxins while preserving beneficial microbiota. IGY Life Sciences continues to invest in clinical research, regulatory advancement, and strategic partnerships to expand the role of IgY in human and animal health.
